Print Nearly 4, years ago, a woman and a man were buried together just east of the Volga River in modern-day Russia, with a secret locked away in the pulp of their teeth. The bodies were uncovered just a few years ago, the teeth pulled and sent westward to the Max Planck Institute in Germany, where Maria Spyrou was working on a Ph. When she subjected the pulp to a bevy of genetic tests, she found something surprising: She published that finding Friday in Nature Communications, providing evidence that the bacteria has origins at least years earlier than scientists had previously thought.
Where do diseases come from in the first place? This could have implications for fighting infectious diseases — also for better understanding human history itself, she said. The first known plague pandemic began in the mid s, well before the Black Death of the 14th century. The fact that plague-causing bacteria were circulating for thousands of years before that initial pandemic raises the question of whether there were other devastating outbreaks that historians have yet to uncover.
The plague-causing Yersinia pestis bacteria lives in rodents. Fleas bite those rodents, and then bite humans, transmitting the bacteria.

It is a museum of archaeology that helps to explain the development of a discipline that was in its infancy when Petrie worked in Egypt over a century ago Fig. It is a teaching collection, its densely packed cases entrancing, and sometimes intimidating, visitors who rave about its old-fashioned feel, but it is anything but frozen in time. The basic facts are that the Petrie Museum tells the story of the Nile Valley from Predynastic Egypt to the emergence of Islam, with 80, objects covering every period of life in Egypt and the Sudan.
In addition, the Petrie holds the largest collection of Roman-period funerary portraits of any Egyptian collection outside the Cairo Museum. However, more intriguing to many are the everyday objects that humanise the past: A less visible but equally valuable resource is the wealth of archival material that supports the collection. Museums are continually challenged to find new ways of explaining their collections, of engaging broader audiences.
The Petrie was one of the first museums in the world to put its entire catalogue online, and interpretation and editing of the database is ongoing. The challenge is to use the limited space — both display and access, onsite and online — to best advantage. The museum was reconfigured to be more physically and intellectually accessible to the public. A key feature of the re-display was a new multi-purpose space Fig.

Cercles[ edit ] Cercles are Student Societies or Fraternities based around each faculty. Most Cercles run small bars to fund their activities, and also jointly operate a larger nightclub, “La Casa”. The calotte is a Belgian student cap worn by students attending Catholic universities.
They are emblems of student folklore dating back to the late 19th century. Nowadays, most calottes are passed by way of a ceremony known as the coronae. One thing that is universally known, is that there is a lot of singing involved. Cercles are notorious for their generally high output of alcohol especially beer and low level of cleanliness.
Students tend to wear old clothes that they don’t mind damaging or dirtying as a consequence, and the overall ambiance is more akin to a rave or a frat-party than a nightclub or sports bar. Kots[ edit ] Student accommodation in Belgium comes in the form of a “kot”, a term having Belgian Dutch origin. A “kot” can be translated as den or hut.
The French way to form the plural of “kot” is “kots” in Dutch, the plural of “kot” is “koten”. In the bilingual region of Brussels, where there are both Dutch- and French-speaking universities and their students, it is common that “for rent” signs are in French only, with the French plural of “kot”. Being small several Kots can be situated in the same, university owned, apartment building.
